These Boots Are Made For Walking

And that’s just what they’ll do

One of these days, these boots are gonna walk all over you.

Are you ready, boots?

Start Walkin

(Nancy Sinatra recorded Lee Hazlewood’s song “These Boots are Made for Walkin’”

It charted on January 22, 1966 and reached No. 1 both in the US and UK.)

In the Fortitude section of my e-newsletter this month, I wrote this about the benefits of walking:

Mad! Pissed! Scared! Worried about money! Saddened by what is happening to people!

I hear these remarks from people and friends—and yes, me, too. Rarely do I watch a full newscast these days because it is too depressing.

A long walk outside calms me down. My dog stays home. She doesn’t need to be with her agitated ‘mother.’

Some days I find myself singing as I walk, lyrics from Nancy Sinatra’s 1966 hit song, “Boots.”

When I am seeking an answer to a perplexing situation, I ask the question when I start walking, and then make myself stop thinking about it.  Many times, when I get back home, the answer comes to me.

Over the centuries, people have found solace and sometimes answers when they walk. Many famous walks exist around the world, including in this country and in the beautiful state where I live, Colorado. I have found that “any old walk” will do. I have fond memories of walking farther than I can now.

So, what are the benefits of walking, how long do you need to walk to get them, and does it matter where you walk?

Many in the medical profession say that walking provides the physical benefits of exercise while also boosting emotional well-being.

The physical benefits of walking include weight control—whether you want to lose extra pounds or maintain your current weight. It helps prevent heart and blood vessel diseases, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and stroke.

Walking can help with these mental health conditions: anxiety, mood disorders, psychosis, and personality disorders.

Other non-medical benefits of walking include increased mindfulness, reduced stress, creative insights, and enhanced presence. People practice walking meditations, nature walks, pilgrimage walks, gratitude walks, and Intuitive Walking.
