In my June e-newsletter, I wrote:
“Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun” is a 1959 ad slogan for Doublemint Gum, sung by identical Doublemint Sisters dressed in light green. For years, I have done a simple morning meditation after writing in my journal. It calms me down! Recently, I have also meditated at night before going to bed. It helps me immensely.
This is from my book Paths – A Prime for Ladies-of-a-Certain Age—A Workbook for the Road Ahead. It was published in 2020.
People of all ages benefit from mediation, but the payback for ladies of a certain age is enormous, according to articles published by AARP and U.S. News & World Report.
The benefits are as follows:
Lowered breathing, heart, and blood pressure rates
Improved digestion
Sharpened and focused mind
Reduced anxiety
Increased relaxation
Better management of moods and emotions
Many women of a certain age experience loneliness, sadness, and depression after losing important people and pets, as well as their independence at this stage of life. Daily meditation can help manage these feelings.
Just like exercise, the main point for meditation is the same—do it and make no excuses. Any form or style of meditation will work. You get to choose what works best for you.
Personal note: I have a simple meditation routine that has worked for me for years. Each morning, I sit on my living room couch, look out the front window, and set a timer for 15 minutes. Then, I say a few simple social prayers, close my eyes, and listen for any sound I hear. No, I have never reached nirvana, but I always experience peace and gain knowledge about problematic areas in my life.
