You don’t have to tell anyone that you play as a lady of a certain age.

No, I’m not talking about pickleball or mahjong.  I’m talking about playing all by yourself.

You can dream. You can pretend. You can have a tea party with your dolls, or dig a hole to China in your backyard. You can do anything you want.

Psychologists say that play is beneficial for women of a certain age.

Here are a few benefits:

It contributes to overall health and well-being

Reduces anxiety, depression, and stress.

Promotes cognitive growth

It can boost creativity.

Assistance with problem-solving

For me, I schedule “play dates” in the calendar each week.

I have fun—get excited—about making my plans—and I look forward to this time. I treat it as important as any other notable “appointment.” Here are a few of my recent play dates: visiting garden shops and floral boutiques, wandering downtown and exploring shops, and rides to nearby scenic spots.

Also, I take time just to dream and imagine. There’s no fixed schedule. I often do this while I’m at my kitchen table, looking out at my yard and garden, or the sky. I love sunrises and sunsets because the colors of the sky boost my ability to dream.

I’m always surprised at how relaxed I feel after playing. Often, solutions to confusing problems come to light.
