My e-newsletter, sent to subscribers, features a section called “Fortitude.” In this section, I share quick tips for navigating the challenging emotional times we’re living in.
Here’s what I wrote in the January 2026 e-newsletter:
During these trying times, I remind myself of the tools I have at my disposal. “Posso,” “posso,” “posso!” I often repeat to myself. “Posso” means “I can” in Italian. One of my friends shares her mantra: “Don’t let the bastards get you down.” I use that too.
Other strategies I employ include:
– Meditation
– The phrase “This too will pass”
– Seeking the beauty of a sunrise or sunset (or revisiting my mental photo album of these moments)
– Walking the dog
– Seeking comfort from my cat
(Two other topics are regularly covered in the e-newsletter: Fashion—what makes sense at this point in life and a simple, nutritious meal for one or two people.)

Recently, I had a dream about a professional friend I knew from years ago. I looked her up on Facebook and was surprised to find that she had been posting about her wonderful life, including recent travels to several foreign countries and a heartfelt tribute to her husband of many years.
While I was happy for her, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of envy. Then, I remembered this helpful phrase: “Don’t judge your insides by someone else’s outsides.”
Having been in public relations and marketing for over 40 years, I’ve developed a habit of checking the news several times a day. However, I’ve found that the news has become increasingly disturbing, so I’ve decided to take a break and check it only a few times a day. At times, I even shut it off completely! There’s nothing I can do about it anyway.
I reside in a beautiful part of Colorado that I chose for retirement. While I do miss having a Trader Joe’s nearby, I find immense joy in stepping out my front door and being greeted by the majestic mountains that surround the valley where I live.
