(Like dust and cobwebs, hair and eyebrows fade, disappear, or alter in twisty ways.)

In some parts of the world, aging is valued. Women do not spend time and money on products and procedures to make themselves appear younger. In the United States, they are dive-bombed with youthful messages, like mosquitoes on a lake. Some women, including myself, apply “mosquito repellent” by ignoring these messages and appreciating the work of Mother Nature.

It’s up to you what you choose to do.

Eyebrows

Every part of the body is affected by aging; eyebrows are no exception. Not all eyebrows change in the same way. Some thin out, while others become coarse or unruly. Often, their color fades.

Ladies of a certain age may remember their mothers and grandmothers trying to “fix their eyebrows” with the colored pencil they had always used. However, the color no longer seemed effective. Of course, these women did not have smartphones and access to a constellation of options, like the stars in the sky.

Here’s a list of options I found on my smartphone:

1. Eyebrow stencils – A wide variety of shapes, many of which are reusable. The kits include filing and tinting definers, which resemble magic markers.

2. Brow powders – fill in patchy spots and can be used to make eyebrow arches thicker.

3. Brow pencil and gels – often used to extend the brow tails that frequently thin first.

4. Brow markers, or felt-tip pens, are used to fill in missing hair.

5. Dying by a professional colorist at a salon

6. Tweeze unruly hairs.

7. Brow Lift – is a medical procedure that repositions the forehead to correct wrinkles and sagging eyebrows.

8. Eyebrow threading – A thin fiber thread woven into the skin to remove unwanted hair

9. Eyebrow tattooing

Hair

Going gray is a personal decision. Some women recognize the potential impact on their hair due to their older family members’ experiences. While some women wouldn’t consider going gray without dyeing their hair, others prefer not to spend their time in beauty salons or doing it themselves. Still others would rather allocate the money they would spend on hair care to other things.

Hair dyeing has come a long way. Constant root touch-ups are not always necessary. Techniques such as balayage, highlights, and root smudging are available.

Hair dye can help with thinning hair by adding more components to the hair shaft. Various topical formulas are often helpful. Several hair spray products add volume.

Special shampoo, often referred to as blue or purple, can enhance gray or white hair and reduce a yellow sheen. The yellow sheen may result from cigarette smoke or pollutants.

The cut and hairstyle are personal matters. In days gone by, women were admonished not to grow their hair beyond chin length because it accentuated sagging skin or twist their hair in a bun (such an old-lady thing to do!). The pixie style was touted as ideal because it required minimal maintenance and effort.
