The Good News:  Two large retailers actually showed models with gray hair this year in their catalogs and web sites:  Lands End and Chicos.  I sent their web customer service departments a congratulatory note and encourage you to do the same.  You can reach Lands End at https://www.landsend.com/customerservice/contact_us/ and Chico’s at customerservice@chicos.com

Three quick and easy spring fashion updates you can make right now:

  1. Put on a tunic – the long wide “forgiving” top (Great to cover bulges and a waist that is no longer 20 inches)
  2. Get out your “statement sneakers,” colored canvas shoes from last year or buy a pair of “flat mules,” flat shoes with no heals
  3. Wear a shade of orange, peach or coral.

Tunics are wonderful for us ladies.  They are comfortable and can look really fashionable as long as they are not too wide or baggy.  Proportion to your body is key. I see tunics everywhere for example, Kmart, Target, Nordstrom, J. Jill, Chico’s, and Lands End.  Oddly, they are not listed in Elle Magazine’s Fashion Trend Report.  I like them for their ease and versatility. By adding a turtle neck, t-shirt. cami, or tank underneath, I am able to wear mine almost all year.

“Statement sneakers,” what are those?  You know tennis shoes that have printed fabric instead of plain fabric.  Boat shoes are in the same boat. (Oh my!?!)  My mother had mule slippers with fur on them.  I did not know what mules were until I looked at Elle magazine’s fashion report.  Well, ladies the bottom line is – you don’t have to worry about heals!!

Orange is the hottest fashion color now. But!!!  Few women can wear it against their skin.  The best way to find out if you can is to figure out what “season” your personal coloring is. If you happen to be one of the few “Fall Season” women, you can wear orange with no problem.  Any other season, beware.  Orange looks terrible close to skin; however, if you are a “Spring or Summer Season” woman, you can wear peach or light coral, also popular colors this spring. Us poor “Winter Season” women, have to stick to adding bits of orange, peach or coral to our wardrobe, but not next to the skin.  Here’s the web site if you do not know which season you are. http://www.colormebeautiful.com/seasons/index.html

For me, a “Winter Season” gal, I am going to wear little dabs of orange probably with jeans and a white shirt.  I already have these pieces in my closet: An orange purse, boat shoes, top-siders, with some orange poises in the floral design, and a silver necklace with a few orange beads.Other fashion colors popular now include rose quartz, lilac gray, a light green, an orange red, vivid yellow and three shades of  light blue: sky, navy and turquoise.

Depending on your fashion personality type, Classic, Romantic, Trendy Casual, you may want to include the following to your wardrobe:

  • Ruffles and puffy sleeves
  • Floral prints
  • A new statement white shirt
  • Hot red orange and black which shows the Spanish influence in fashion
  • Narrow pleats
  • Netting (Jaclyn Smith at Kmart has a stunning net hoodie)
  • Marbled colored knits
  • Fringe (popular again this season)
  • Lightweight denim (I bought a denim tunic shirt this week)
  • Plaid

Finally, a half-moon shape purse is all the rage this spring.  Well, frankly, that shape does not work for me.  In fact, it drives me crazy because it prevents me from getting all my rectangular shaped items in the bag.  I’m one of this Classic Fashion Personality types.  So, at the end of March I will put away my beloved black square-shaped Monsac bag, and get out my rectangular cream-colored Coach that I just purchased at one of my favorite consignment shops. Last summer I had a stripped tote bag.  It also drove me crazy because I never could find anything in it.
