Last week I got so excited.  I truly felt like a kid again. Thanks to Pottermore.com, https://www.pottermore.com/, I got to play as a character in one of my favorite book series, Harry Potter.  (Sure wish there had been a NancyDrewmore.com 55 years ago!)

At age 67, I became part of the Harry Potter gang and was off to my first year at Hogwarts, School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.  I got my list of  school supplies and books, “bought” my very own wand, a red oak with Unicorn core, 12 ¼ inches, reasonably supple, as well as a “magical creature,” a screeching owl,  and went  through the “Sorting Hat” ceremony to find out which house I would be in.  My name became Hawthorn Mahogany and I am now in the Gryhffendor House!  Frankly, I was amazed how excited and good I felt.  Imagination is such fun!

Play at this age?  Why not? The few aches and pains I have went away, and the world was a sunnier and happier place.  I know this little soirée supported my mental, physical and spiritual self.  I’m going to play more.

Housekeeping, bill paying, gardening, even golfing can just wait!  I’m going to the park and swing on a swing, buy an ice cream cone and a bottle of bubbles, lie on my back in the park and see the animals and other stuff in the clouds float by.

Playmates?  Well, I do have a few — grandkids!  They take the lead and I play along, because they know how to play and it is such fun to play with them.  I have become a princess, a horse, a pirate and lots of other characters, been to many tea parties, and lots of magical places!

What about us?  Is it too late to play “dress up,” have a tea party with our dollies and stuffed animals, be a dinosaur, go off to the moon?  How about playing paper dollies that look like us, and we can make them outfits out of paper and crayons?  Well, I think it would be fun to try!  Can you play with me?

On another note:  I hope I did not disappoint you by not publishing  in this edition the 2014 Fall Fashion Report for Ladies –of- a -Certain -Age.  You see, recently, I went to the shopping center to pick up sheets I bought on-line.  Going to a shopping center is always a traumatic experience for me.  Just getting there – all that traffic – then,  those creepy covered parking lots, finding a parking spot and finally, remembering to remember where I parked.  Once inside, there is the challenge of dodging the “under 30s” as they are walking and texting, the screaming kids in play land, and the blaring music.  But – for you, Dear Reader – I will submit to this torture soon and then publish the report in the September issue!

On a great note:  I am inviting you to take an easy hike with me in  a Jefferson County Mountain park and then coming to my home for soup, bread and dessert the third Sunday in September, October and November.  I think you should get home before it gets dark. We will enjoy autumn together – colored leaves and cool air – camaraderie, and a great change to just walk and chat, which are so good for us. Interested? Contact me ASAP.  My cottage can hold only so many, so first-come, first-served.  Just email me at egeniewhee@aol.com.. I will send you further details.
